HISTORY

The Thorn family plot is very visible as it is marked with large cement slabs, poured flush with fehe ground surface, and havs -vistJl rs~ plates imbedded in the cement. According to Charlie Rawlings, in his book,OUR NECK OF THE WOODS, another eecly burial was that of Henry Baker's wife. She was a sister of Joaph D. Thorn, however, there are no records to substantiate this fact.

David Smith, one of the first settlers in the area, donated five acres of land for the original cemetery. The Dayton Cemetery Association was incorporated in February 1889, "as a non-profit body for the purpose of providing and maintaining a burial place." The cemetery has been extended in more recent years by an acreage donated by Hans and Margaret Klieber.

For many years there was no provision for regular maintenence, therefore every family was responsible for their own plot. The past few years, the town has been in a financial position to provide the necessary maintenance. Leveling, clearing of brush and the rearrangement of markers, along with regular mowing and watering, have kept the grounds in condition for all to look with pride.
