CEMETERIES listed are many miles out in the country, some unmarked graves,
many listed by the ranches. If you know of other grave sites, please e-mail me
so I can post them and give a copy to the Wyoming Room in the Sheridan
Library for their records.
There are many rural graves, they are hard to find and 50 or more miles
from the nearest little town. If you want to find or check names in the
city of Sheridan Cemetery e-mail me.The town or areas listed are: Birney,
Monarch(now defunct) Slack aka PassCreek, and unlisted areas with a few
graves. Kearney, Clearmont, Spotted Horse, and Carneyville,
BIRNEY CEMETERY, location: On the southern border of the Warren Brester
ranch on the right side of the road within sight of the Tongue River, fenced
with wire. Battle Butte was the site between the Army forces and the
Cheyennes. The land for the cemetery was contibuted by Lottie Lilbaugh
a pioneer resident of the Birney County. On Memorial Day,the Birney
Woman's Club makes an annual event of cleaning up the cemetery.
On the top of the graves is a metal inlay with the name of "Beal Mortuary".
Scores have "Champions Funeral Home."
These are from old notes, transcribed exactly as written.

SHERIDAN COUNTY
DEFUNCT CEMETERY-SUNNYBROOK CEMETERY AT CLEARMONT, WY.
NU1 1/4, NW I/ 4 Sec 21 Township 54N, Range 79W.
The Clearmont Cemetery, according to a Clerk at the Town Hall is badly overgrown and few headstones remain
standing in the old grounds.
She gave the impression it was not in good condition. She also stated that a Mayor some years ago became
upset over a decision and burned many of the Town records- She did not know if Cemetery records were
among what had been burned. If the history below is correct, the town may have had no knowledge or
responsibility for those buried here.
The dead cowboy became the first resident of the local cemetery, which was named after his favorite drink,
Sunny Brook. The fenced in area measures 9O' x 215' and lies north west of Clearmont, Uyo. It is located on
a gentle slope. It is also worth noting that the town lays no claim to the cemetery nor is there any title to said plot.
No records are known to exist on who is buried in the Sunny Brook Cemetery.
Visual inspection shows about 41 graves with 8 permanent headstones, four fenced in lots and the

Rest either marked by crosses or rooks. Through research and people's knowledge
we have disclosed the names of 32 people buried in the Sunny Brook Cemetery.
Like the legend—Who was the cowboy that drank Sunny Brook,
Who claims the land and who has been buried there is a legend of mystery!

ST. THOMAS CEMETERY BURIALS
The Catholic Faithful of the St. Thomas Parish are interred in an early graveyard at Carneyville
(Kleenburn). In the autumn of 1907 a church site was secured and an aggreement entered.

This agreement was between the church and the Carney Coal Company for the erections of a church
building and parochial residence in the coal mining camp of Carneyville Inc.
September of that same year, this mission was formally created with the first priest from
Holland, Father Henry Schellinger. He served this parish until 1913. The plot of land was officially leased in
1908 from the Carney Coal Company for the price of $1.00 for a time period of ninety- nine years. A quitclaim deed in
favor of the Sheridan-Wy Coal Co. on Dec. 1, 1924 is noted from the Minute Book of theChurch.
PARISH PRIESTS :
REV. HENRY SCHELLINGER, native of Holland, 1907-1913
REV. LUDWIG GRYMACHER, native of Poland, 1913 – 1915
REV. CASIMIR TOMIAK, native of Poland, 1915 – 1917
REV. THEODORE SHULTZ, Pennsylvanian of Polish parents, 1917 – July 16,1924. During his administration,
the church was burned twice & the rectory once. Investigations by the local Sheriff proved only that they were
of an incendiary nature. No one was ever charged with these crimes although articles from the Sheridan Post
indicated that the Ku Klux Klan, an organization here in Sheridan with members ranging from as many as 500
may have been involved. The last church for the St. Thomas Parish was built from stone in Monarch.
REV. PETER P. SZYMANSKI, Baltimore, Md., of Polish descent, 1923-1926
Holy Name Parish, Sheridan was given this as a mission for two years until 2- 1-1928
REV. JOHN MCDEVITT – 1928-1933
REV. THOMAS F. O’REILLY- 1933-1936
REV. FREDERICK J. KIMMETT- Few months only REV. PETER O’GRADY –1937-1939
REV. DANIEL P. CARROLL- 1939-?
INTERRED
Names listed were transcribed by Jeanne Sanchez from the records of the Holy Name Church,
Ferries and Champion Mortuary Records, Sheridan, Wyoming, and from the remaining headstones
at the graveyard. Spelling was left as found in the source records, except where family members corrected the spelling.
